Halloween is just around the corner, and just like me, you may be a little more excited for it than others. This is the one time in the year where it’s totally acceptable to dress up as your favorite monster, scare the living daylights out of your friends, and of course have a shameless binge on candy. If it’s your turn to host the party, then you may be finding yourself a little stuck for ideas. Here are a few pointers, which will make your party both spooky and stylish.
First of all, focus on theming your food rather than your décor. Of course, being an obsessive foodie, I would say that. Halloween’s a very playful holiday, so the odd pumpkin and some scattered cobwebs will make great touches. However, if you really want to make your Halloween party memorable, I recommend focusing on theming the food a little more than the house. A festive cake is sure to go down a storm. Angel food cake with a web-like icing and a couple of candy spiders are both easy and effective. If you want to accommodate for your friends who won’t touch fats, then try using melons and blackberries in an orange and black hors d'oeuvres.
Another great way to make your Halloween party a little more memorable is setting a cool theme. Many of the Halloween parties I’ve been to in the past have started off with something of a unique thrill and quickly turned into just another party where people happen to be in costume. Set a theme, and you’ll give the whole night a much more potent dose of Halloween spirit (that’s totally a thing!). Masquerade balls will make for some amazing pictures, and will also make the event a little more sophisticated than your run-of-the-mill party. Dead celebrities and heroes and villains are also good ideas. It’s your party though, so go with whatever you want. Brainstorm for some good themes, settle on one and then tell all your guests about it with some cool custom invitations.
Finally, try to be a little creative with your cocktails. It’s easy enough to lay out the usual glasses and call red wine “blood”. I’m sure you can do better than that though! Why not spice up the glassware by getting some vials, and filling them with different colored cocktails like the chemicals in a mad scientist’s laboratory. This is a very easy move and will add a wonderful, unique touch to the night.
Another good idea is having a punch-bowl with a hand floating in it. Simply fill a rubber glove with a colored cocktail, seal it with a rubber band, and freeze it overnight. Once you’ve made the punch, drop it in and let it float there eerily. As the ice melts, the punch will become stronger and stronger, which is always a good thing at a party!
